Paint the globe is an interesting initiative from the Paint Project—an organization that aims to paint roofs around the world white, reflecting the sun’s rays, keeping houses cooler and thus reducing cooling costs to help slow global warming.
This incredibly simple idea has huge potential to make a difference. As U.S. Secretary of Energy Steve Chu explains, “Making roads and roofs a paler colour could have the equivalent effects of taking every car in the world off the road for 11 years.”
As we all know human pollution has led to the depletion of our ozone, which has in turn increased the amount of solar radiation reaching our planet’s surface. Now radiation that would have once been reflected back into space by the earth’s natural surface is being absorbed by the dark synthetic surfaces found throughout the world’s urban centers. By painting these surfaces a lighter colour, they will be able to reflect more solar radiation, thus cooling urban areas. This will in turn decrease air-conditioning demands and energy usage.
So why not take part and paint your roof white!
